Expectorants help with the expulsion of the mucosal secretions of the trachea and the bronchi. How do expectorants work in the respiratory system? They act by thinning the mucus viscosity causing it to become more fluid. Therefore, the mucus is more easily eliminated. Expectorants then, have the capacity to clean the bronchi and relieve coughs.
